Protection
Knowing the gender disparities and patriarchal social structure in the region, where women are contending with the problem of status compounded by their gaps in skills, resources and leadership with a very high vulnerability to violence.
GEMSDO sees the following thematic priorities for human rights protection in the region.
- Combating impunity and strengthening accountability, the rule of law, and democratic societies, with an emphasis on institution and capacity building
- Protecting human rights in situations of violence and insecurity, with a focus on the protection of civilians, internally displaced persons and journalists
- Countering discrimination, with a special focus on discrimination against women and ethnic minorities;
- Supporting the signature, ratification and implementation of human rights treaties and facilitating Somalia’s effective cooperation with Special Procedures of the Human Rights organizations; and
- Raising awareness about economic and social rights.
GEMSDO ensures women’s access to resources and participation in decision-making processes. Projects are designed to promote women roles in the society, promote them economically, and provide livelihood trainings and financial means. Through its holistic approach and having the knock-on effect of income generating capacity, GEMSDO trains women for a range of income generation activities, deliver trainings to female teachers. Training and supporting the legislative and executive function and relevant civic leaders to work together to maintain law and order, protect human rights, support elections and active civic engagement in political participation while promote gender equity and diversity as a central component in program planning, implementation and management.
